FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK

A Word From Our Pastor

"GIVE YOUR WORRIES TO CHRIST"

My husband retired a couple of years ago, and now all he does is worry about his health. He only has a few minor problems (like anyone his age) but all he can think about is how he might become disabled some day, and things like that. How can I change this? Or should I even try?

It’s not wrong to take care of ourselves and live a healthy lifestyle – not at all. God gave our bodies to us, and He wants us to take care of them – not just so we’ll enjoy a longer life, but so we can serve Him more effectively.

But it’s wrong to be so concerned about our health that it becomes an obsession and is all we think about. And this can happen to people of any age, not just older people. Why is it wrong? One reason is because constant worry can actually make our health worse. Stress and constant anxiety eventually take a toll on our bodies – as modern science has confirmed. Job declared, “Fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake” (Job 4:14).

It’s wrong too because it means we aren’t trusting God for the future.

Urge your husband to put his life into Christ’s hands, and to trust Him for the future. The Bible says, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). When we realize how much God loves us, our worries will begin to fade. In addition, encourage your husband to develop some new interests, such as volunteering to help others through your church or other organization.

HISTORY OF THE CHURCH

Greater White Stone Missionary Baptist Church is a Christian institution that was founded August 15, 1925, by Reverend Major J. Jenkins. The original church had its inception at 512 Williams Avenue. In the fall of 1928 the church moved to its present location - 917 South Wellington Street. Rev. Jenkins served as the first pastor until his death in 1943.

Rev. H. R. Jelks was chosen to lead the church from 1944 following the death of Rev. Jenkins. Rev. Jelks served until 1946. In the year 1955 a minister, who was ordained by his brother - Rev. J. W. Williams, confessed his calling and accepted the position as minister of Greater White Stone M.B. Church. This minister was Reverend Alton R. Williams. Rev. Williams served GWS until his death in January 1972.

Our current pastor, the Reverend Joseph H. McGhee, Jr. was elected on April 12, 1972. Under the pastoralship of Rev. Joseph McGhee, our present pastor, our church's property has risen extensively. Many improvements and renovatations have taken place under Rev. McGhee's leadership. One of his major goals has been to purchase additional property for the expansion of the church, sanctuary, and parking lot. His other goal is empowering our young people to continue their education. We are thankful for Rev. McGhee's vision and for his continuous encouragement to our young people.
