ONE IN THE BOND OF LOVE
MAY 24, 2015
"GIFT OF LANGUAGES"
Acts 2:1-7, 12; 1 Corinthians 14:1-25
LESSON TEXT: Acts 2:1-7, 12; 1 Corinthians 14:13-19
THOUGHT TO REMEMBER:
The Holy Spirit helps us live a holy life for God, and to be a blessing to others!
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word and for blessing us with the gift of the Holy Spirit. We thank You for creating us with such a beautiful variety! But we confess that instead of celebrating that variety, we often create barriers. Empower us to remove those barriers as we build one another up as Your Holy Temple.
We pray this in the name of Your Holy Son, Jesus, Amen.
KEEP IN MIND
Memory Verse: "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." (1 Corinthians 14:15).
*The believers were together when God’s Spirit came to them.
*People from many nations heard the Gospel in their own languages.
*The Holy Spirit helps us worship God through praise and prayer.
Today’s lesson is about an amazing way that God enabled the followers of Christ in the first century to make a connection with language. However, Paul gives additional instructions for the believers in Corinth regarding SPEAKING IN TONGUES!
POINTS TO CONSIDER
The risen Christ commanded His followers to wait for power from on high, the Holy Spirit, who would enable them to be witnesses to the entire earth (Luke 24:45-49; Acts 1:4-8). Thus, the Spirit would enable the worldwide triumph of God, the fulfillment of His promise to Abram and a reversal of the judgment of Babel. That enabling began on the Day of Pentecost, about seven weeks after Christ’s crucifixion.
(1) God wants to speak to every person in his or her own language and give the saving message of salvation in Jesus Christ. (Acts 2:1-7, 12)
(2) A gift intended to show that God seeks everyone must not be used in a way that excludes anyone. (1 Corinthians 14:13-19)
GIFTS OF LANGUAGES
As TRUE followers of Jesus, we need to consider how we use the abilities that God's Holy Spirit has given us. We need to look past the controversy about speaking in tongues in our day and instead give careful thought to whether we act in the name of Christ in ways that make others feel second-rate or left out altogether.
We should speak or act in ways that is easy for others to understand. We should be assured that everyone is fully welcomed, fully engaged, fully a part of the life of Christ's church. Finally, is our church more like the
DAY OF PENTECOST or the TOWER OF BABEL?
Attention All GWS Members:
Please remember to participate in the church benevolent ministry and pray for our members, for we strive to help our sick & shut-in members, especially those who are hospitalized, in nursing homes, or our homebound members.
The names of the Sick & Shut-In Members and the Hospitalized Members are listed in the church bulletin each Sunday.
Also, our thoughts and prayers are with the members who have lost a loved one...We will keep you in our prayers! May God bring you and your family comfort and peace.
Remember: God comforts us so we may comfort others.
So Call, Write, or Visit a Member today!
Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God and worthy of all praise and honor.
